By choosing this tour you will have the opportunity to follow closely the career of Michelangelo in Florence through his sculptures and places that still speak of him. Man with a proud character, irascible and solitary, Michelangelo Buonarroti created some of the most beautiful sculptures in the world, such as the famous Pietà in Rome and the gigantic marble David in Florence at the Galleria dell’Accademia. “… Every block of stone has a statue inside and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
Accompanied by an experienced guide you will know the divine artist through the sculptures in the Buonarroti Museum, continuing inside the Medici Chapels in order to finish inside the famous Galleria dell’Accademia to admire the David and the so called “prigioni” left unfinished by the artist.
Meeting with the guide in Piazza della Signoria and entrance to Casa Buonarroti, the palace which he bought for the family and subsequently decorated. It become the museum of the great artist, which houses his early works, collections of drawings by Michelangelo, sketches and projects of the artist, including the wooden model for the façade of the San Lorenzo church, never accomplished.
The Medici Chapels are home to the graves of 50 members of the noble Florentine family. Inside you will visit the New Sacristy by Michelangelo along with the graves of the Dukes Lorenzo and Giuliano de’ Medici, decorated by the beautiful allegories made by the artist representing the Day, Night, Dusk and Dawn.
Galleria dell’Accademia: The tour will end inside the most visited museum in the city, the Accademia Gallery, where every year 6.000 tourists come to see up close the giant David, symbol of Florence and one of the most famous and admired in the world that Michelangelo made in just three years at the age of 26. The gallery also hosts other statues by the artist, the so-called “Prigioni” (prisoners), unfinished and showing visible signs left by the chisel of the artist during his work and the technique used by the artist giving us the illusion to admire the statues during their creation.
At the end of the tour you can remain in the museum at your leisure.
